He earned his PhD in Computer Science and Law from the University of Melbourne in 2012. Eckersley was renowned for his work at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) from 2006 to 2018, where he served as Chief Computer Scientist and Head of AI Policy. During his tenure, he initiated significant projects aimed at enhancing internet security and privacy, including Let's Encrypt, Privacy Badger, Certbot, HTTPS Everywhere, SSL Observatory, and Panopticlick. In 2018, he became the Director of Research at the Partnership on AI, a position he held until 2020. In 2021, he co-founded the AI Objectives Institute, focusing on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.
