Christmas Comes But Once a Year (1936) is a Fleischer Studios / Paramount Color Classics short starring Professor Grampy. On a bleak Christmas morning in a gloomy orphanage, the children wake to broken toys and disappointment—until Grampy arrives, raids the cupboards and closets, and uses his inventive genius to transform junk into toys, decorations and a makeshift holiday wonderland. Produced in the three-strip Technicolor era as Fleischer’s answer to Disney’s Silly Symphonies, the cartoon mixes emotion, clever mechanical gags and richly colored Golden Age animation.
